Tommy Dorfman is Reintroducing Herself

There are few things in this world more beautiful than being able to live life just as you are – and Tommy Dorfman is living that beauty.

In a new interview with TIME magazine, the 13 Reasons Why and Jane the Virgin alum explains she’s transgender and has been “privately identifying” as a trans woman for a year.  But her revelation is not a “coming out” – it’s more a re-introduction of who she is.

“Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out,” she says.

“Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman. My pronouns are she/her. My name is Tommy.”

She also tells the publication about her decision to transition, how she’s no longer interested in portraying male characters and how she decided to keep her birth name because of its sentimental meaning:

“I’m named after my mom’s brother who passed a month after I was born, and I feel very connected to that name, to an uncle who held me as he was dying.”

She adds, “this is an evolution of Tommy. I’m becoming more Tommy.”

In a post sharing her interview with her 1.4 million Instagram followers, Tommy also expressed gratitude “to every single trans person who walked this path, broke down the barriers, and risked their lives to live authentically and radically as themselves before me.”
