Cody Simpson Qualifies for Australia’s Olympic Swimming Trials

Is there anything Cody Simpson can’t do?

We’re going with no. There really isn’t.

The 23-year-old musician, poet and environmental advocate casually announced on his socials that he’s qualified for Australia’s Olympic Swimming Trials!

“Growing up competing, and then inevitably having to cut my career short as a 13-year-old Australian champion when I was given an opportunity in music that I couldn’t refuse,” he writes on Instagram.

“I have had the chance to experience and learn so much as a musician from touring around the world, releasing albums, performing as a leading man on Broadway, publishing a work of poetry, travelling with and speaking at the United Nations on environmental and oceanic matters and much more.”

While Cody says he’s grateful for all he’s experienced so far, almost 10 years later, he’s back to finishing what he started:

“For years, I had been fuelled by the silent fire in my stomach of returning to the sport of swimming with the idea that 2020 would be the year I’d try training again. After only 5 months in the water with my incredible coach @hawkebr, I was able to take out a win and secure a spot at next year’s Australian Olympic trials in the 100 fly.”

Cody qualified for next year’s event in 54.9 seconds.

He even got a few messages of support from some iconic swimmers including 28-time Olympic medal winner Michael Phelps who commented “Lfg!! Congrats mate.”

Aussie swimming legend Ian Thorpe commented “happy to see you in the pool and enjoying it!” while Aussie gold and silver medalist Giaan Rooney wrote, ” Exceptional!”

And if you’re concerned this may mean the end of Cody’s music career – according to mum Angie Simpson there’s nothing to worry about.

Responding to a fan who asked “are you quitting music, please don’t,” Angie commented, “he isn’t.”

Phew.
