Naomi Osaka has shared an important message about self love, shifting her mindset and realising she no longer needs to live up to other people’s expectations.
In a note posted to her socials, the tennis star says that after reflecting on the year that’s passed (aka prioritising her mental health and pulling out of international comps), she can see how “self-deprecating” she’s been:
“Recently I’ve been asking myself why do I feel the way I do and I realise one of the reasons is because internally I think I’m never good enough. I’ve never told myself that I’ve done a good job but I do know I constantly tell myself that I suck or I could do better.”
She adds that whenever a new opportunity arises she thinks to herself, “wow, why me?”
But she’s actively working on changing that attitude and shifting that mindset.
“I’m gonna try to celebrate myself and my accomplishments more, I think we all should. You got up in the morning and didn’t procrastinate on something? Champion. Figured something out at work that’s been bugging you for a while? Absolute legend. Your life is your own and you shouldn’t value yourself on other people’s standards.”
Naomi says she can no longer burden herself with those expectations.
Yep, she’s realising that she’s enough, just as she is.
Naomi also posted a series of videos, sharing some of her positive memories from the year including a behind-the-scenes look at the Tokyo Olympics where she lit the cauldron.
