Shonda shared her excitement and gratitude over the news too:

“To still be on your screens, in your living rooms, and in your hearts almost ten years later – words cannot express my gratitude. Grey’s was something I made up 20+ years ago, and I am so incredibly proud that it’s been picked up for its 21st season. This honestly could not be possible without you guys… caring about the stories I tell, the talented cast, writers and crew. Wow.”

Camilla Luddington, who plays Dr Jo Wilson in the series, celebrated on Instagram, writing: “Next season, we turn legal drinking age.”

ABC hasn’t shared any details at this stage about returning cast members or a potential release date, but we do know show-runner Meg Marinis who took over from Krista Vernoff at the end of season 19, will be resuming her position.

The 20th season of Grey’s Anatomy, which stars Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr, Kevin McKidd, Kim Raver, Jake Borelli, Caterina Scorsone as well as Camilla Luddington, is now available (on Disney+). Original cast member Ellen Pompeo who starred as Dr Meredith Grey, previously announced she would be stepping back from the show from season 19 onwards and it’s not yet known what part she’ll play in either seasons 20 or 21.

With season 21 confirmed now, Grey’s Anatomy has extended its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama and ABC’s longest-running primetime scripted series.
