Hailey Bieber Opens Up About Recent Heart Procedure Following a Mini-Stroke in the Hopes of Helping Others

A month after being hospitalised for a small blood clot in her brain, Hailey Bieber is sharing more details about her health scare in the hopes of helping others who might be going through something similar.

In a video posted to social media, the model begins by describing the stroke symptoms she experienced ahead of her March 10 hospitalisation:

“The right side of my face started drooping. I couldn’t get a sentence out,” she says of the moment she felt the fingers in her right hand go numb while having breakfast with husband, Justin Bieber.

“Immediately I thought I was having a stroke.”

Hailey says she was taken to hospital and by the time she got there, she no longer had any issues with her face, arm or speech. But she did stay overnight to undergo a series of tests with doctors revealing she had suffered a Transient Ischemic Attack or a mini-stroke.

Her doctors informed her that her use of the birth control pill as someone who suffers from migraines combined with recently contracting COVID-19 and travelling by plane to Paris and back in a short amount of time (and not moving around much while on the plane) created the “perfect storm” for her blood clot.

Hailey explains that she had follow-up scans at another hospital where she was diagnosed with a Grade 5 PFO – a hole in her heart that measured between 12 and 13 millimetres which allowed the blood clot to “escape” and travel to her brain.

She has since undergone an operation to close the small hole and says that it all went “very smoothly.”

“If there’s anybody that watches this that has gone through the same thing or something similar, I definitely really empathise with you,” she says at the end of her video.

“And I understand how life-altering and scary it is.”

In her Insta stories, Hailey used the opportunity to highlight stroke signs and symptoms using the F.A.S.T acronym:

“F = Face Drooping – does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven?

A = Arm Weakness – is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = Speech Difficulty – is speech slurred?

T = Time to call 911” (or your local emergency number)

She also encouraged her 43.5 million followers to consider supporting Partners in Health, a nonprofit working to make healthcare accessible to all.

“50% of people across the globe lack access to essential health care,” Hailey writes. “Partners in Health works to provide high quality health care to those who need it most.”
